Easter Sunday dinner which is served around 2:oo-3:00 in the afternoon is a whole family gathering where the center of the table is the roast lamb on the spit and the red eggs which people tap with each other, trying to avoid cracking their own egg. He, whose egg doesn't break, is considered lucky.

Easter Sunday afternoon the faithful gather once more for prayer with lighted candles. All sing the hymn, "Christ is Risen from the Dead". The people greet one another joyously, saying: "Christ is Risen", the Easter salutation which is answered, "Truly He is Risen". The Gospel is read in various languages, proclaiming the Good News of Resurrection all over the universe without discrimination.

Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday celebrates the glorious and brilliant feast of the Entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. Zechariah had prophesied the entrance of the Messiah into Jerusalem, saying: "Rejoice greatly ... O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, the King comes unto Thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass", Zech. 9:9.

Monday of Holy Week
On this evening we begin with the Hymn of the Bridegroom, "Behold the Bridegroom comes in the midst of the night... beware, therefore, O my soul, lest thou be borne down in sleep..... and lest thou be shut out from the Kingdom . . ."

Great Holy Tuesday
On this evening is sung the beautiful "Hymn of Cassiane", probably a work of Patriarch Photius. It begins: "The woman who had fallen into many sins recognized thy Godhead, O Lord; Woe to me, saith she; receive the sources of my tears, O Thou who doth gather into clouds the water of the sea. Who can trace out the multitude of my sins and the abysses of my misdeeds? "O Thou whose mercy is unbounded".

Great Holy and Wednesday Morning
The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated on this day for the last time during Lent. This very ancient Liturgy is a Vesper Service, with the Holy Gifts presanctified in the Liturgy on the previous Sunday. This Liturgy is solemn, and reflects the grandeur and simplicity of the early Church.

Great Holy Wednesday Evening
Four Events are being celebrated : the washing of the disciples' feet, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the Marvelous Prayer, the betrayal".

Great Holy Thursday Evening
This service is long. Participation in the prayers and the historical sequence of the events, as related in the Gospels and hymns, provides a vivid foundation for the great events yet to come. Following are the references of the "Twelve Gospel" readings of this service:

After the reading of the fifth Gospel comes the procession with the Crucifix around the church, while the priest chants the 15th antiphon: "Today is hung upon the Tree, He Who did hang the land in the midst of the waters".
During the Procession, the faithful Christian kneels and prays for his spiritual welfare, imitating the thief on the Cross who confessed his faith and devotion to Christ. He then approaches and reverently kisses the Crucifix.

Good Friday Morning
During this service, the removal of the Body of Christ from the Cross is commemorated with a sense of mourning for the terrible events which took place. Once more, excerpts from the Old Testament are read together with hymns, and again the entire story is related, followed by the removal from the Cross and the wrapping of the Body of Christ with a white sheet as did Joseph of Arimathea.

Good Friday Evening
It is a lamenting lityrgy consisting of psalms, hymns and readings, dealing with the death of Christ, in contrast to His divinity, and in expectation of His Resurrection.
its Creator hung by His own creatures: "Creation was moved . . . with intense astonishment when it beheld Thee hung in Golgotha". The Odes remind us of the vision of Isaiah, who saw Christ, "the unwaning light of the manifestation", and cried aloud, "The dead indeed shall arise and all those on earth shall rejoice". During this service the Body of Christ in a flower-bedecked Sepulcher, symbolizing the Tomb, is carried around the town in the procession.The entire congregation joins in singing the, three parts of the "Hymns of Praise" .

Great Holy Saturday Morning
Psalms are read and Resurrection hymns are sung which tell of Christ's descent into Hades. "Today Hades cried out groaning" is the hymn's description of the resurrection of Adam and the conquering of death. Thus this day's celebration is called "First Resurrection".

The Holy Sunday of Easter
On Easter Sunday (Saturday midnight) the life-giving Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated. Before midnight, the Odes of Lamentation of the previous day are repeated. The Orthros of the Resurrection begins in complete darkness. The priest takes light from the vigil light and gives it to the faithful, who are holding candles. The priest sings: "Come ye and receive light from the unwaning life, and. glorify Christ, who arose from the dead", and all the people join him in singing this hymn again and again. From this moment, every Christian holds the Easter candle as a symbol of his vivid, deep faith in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ as Savior. The priest and people go outside the church, where the priest at exactly midnight reads the Gospel which refers to the Angels statement: "He is Risen; He is not here", Mark 16:1-8.
Then comes the breathless moment as the people wait for the priest to start the hymn of Resurrection, which they join him in singing, repeatedly: "Christ has Risen from the dead, by death trampling upon Death, and has bestowed life upon those in the tombs". From this moment the entire service takes on a joyous Easter atmosphere and firewotks cover the sky of the towns.

The festive Holidays Season, in Greece, ends on Epiphany Day (January 6) when the Church celebrates the baptism of Jesus and the priests throw a cross in the sea, rivers, lakes or even water reservoirs. In the islands and the seaside towns, young men dive to retrieve the cross and the person, that catches, it is considered blessed. In the other areas the cross is tied on a ribbon and retrieved back by the priest.

In the past on Epiphany Eve carolers went around the houses to sing about the baptism of Jesus. Nowadays the custom tends to be forgotten and is kept only in villages.

Christmas Holidays Sweets

In Greece every house is filled with the traditional Christmas Holidays Sweets, “melomakarona” (also called phoenikia) which are honey and walnut cookies and “kourambiedes”, almond and icing sugar cookies. In some areas of Greece especially in Peloponese “diples” (or aftakia, meaning small ears ) a kind of fried pastry covered with syrup and walnuts.

Recipes

MELOMAKARONA

2 cups oil

1 cup sugar

1 cup orange juice

1 cup fine semolina

1 kilo soft flour

1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

Lemon and Orange zest

Simple syrup: (In a pot, mix together 1 cup each of water, honey and sugar and bring to boil while stirring constantly.)

Crushed walnuts

Preheat oven to 200c

Beat oil well with mixer, then add the sugar, zests, orange juice, semolina, and then, a little at a time, the flour mixed with the baking soda.

Form the dough into small shapes, as the pastries will get quite big while baking. Make sure the oven is hot before baking, otherwise the pastries will flatten. Bake for about 30 minutes until pastries are firm and golden brown.

When completely cooled, arrange in rows in a serving plate and pour warm syrup over them. Sprinkle with crushed walnuts.

KOURAMBIEDES

2 kilos soft flour

1 kilo butter

300 grams powdered sugar

300 grams crushed roasted almonds

1 small glass cognac

1 teaspoon baking soda

Rosewater

Preheat oven to 175c

Whiten the butter by beating by hand for ½ hour. Add the sugar, cognac, almonds and finally the flour, mixed with the baking soda. Continue to beat until all ingredients are well mixed.

Mold into crescent or round shapes and place on a cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with rosewater, then roll in the powder sugar.

DIPLES

6 cups flour

1 cup sugar

10 eggs

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla extract

Oil for frying

1 1/2 cups honey

1 1/2 cups water

1 cup chopped walnuts

A dash of cinnamon

Place flour in a bowl. Add the sugar, vanilla, eggs and baking powder. Knead until dough is smooth and firm.

Let rest for 30 minutes

Cut dough in small pieces and roll out to sheets. With a knife cut sheets into 2 inch wide strips

Heat oil

Fry “diples” both sides. When done place them on paper to absorb excess oil and then in a serving plate. Sprinkle with nuts.

Syrup: In a saucepan bring to boil the water, the honey and the cinnamon while stirring constantly.

Pour the syrup over the "diples".

New Year's Traditions

On New Year’s Eve children go around the houses singing New Year’s carols "kalanda" using metal triangles and they are offered sweets and money.

At exactly midnight on December 31 the father or the older person in the household turns off the main power switch so "new light" will come with the New Year. Then a special kind of cake called "vassilopita" containing a coin is cut along the members of the family and friends. Every person and even the pets of the household are entitled to one piece. One piece is dedicated to Jesus, one to St. Basil and one to the house itself. Whoever finds the coin in his piece is considered to be lucky for the whole year. Gifts are exchanged at that moment or on the following morning, St. Basil's Day (January 1).

The New Year in Greece is not only celebrated as the first day of the year but they also celebrate it as St. Basil's day. St. Basil is one of the founders of the Greek Orthodox Church. The people of Greece believe that he died on New Year Day so they honour him and remember him for his generosity and kindness to the poor on that day.

According to the legend St. Basil was the archbishop of Caesaria when, the Cappadocian Prefect cruelly intended went to collect taxes. The people, full of fear, asked for their bishop’s protection. He told them to bring any valuable things they had in their houses go together with him to welcome the Prefect. But St. Basil had such an appearance and conviction that the Prefect finally didn’t accept the people’s presents. So St. Basil tried to return their valuables. But it was very difficult because they had offered many similar items: rings, necklaces, coins etc., so St. Basil ordered to make small pies in each one he put one of the items. The following day he gave each Christian one pie. And then the miracle happened! Inside their pies they found whatever they had given.

On New Year Day the farmers' families in Greece take plates of seeds to the church to get them blessed by the priest to start off the New Year.

At Christmas we organize a big party with our family, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents and grand- parents. On the24th December we generally eat stuffed turkey and a chocolate yule log. Before midnight we offer each other presents which have bien placed under the Christmas tree by father Christmas. At midnight we go to the mass then we drink hot chocolate or hot wine.

Christmas Traditions

In Greece, there are many Christmas customs that are similar, yet slightly different from the West.

While other cultures have Christmas elves, the Greek equivalent is not so benign. They are called "Kallikantzaroi" and are monkey-like mischievous black almost invariably male creatures.

There are a number of beliefs connected with these spirits, which are supposed to be a species of goblins that appear only during the 12-day period from Christmas to the Epiphany (January 6). These creatures are believed to come from the center of the earth where they try to cut the tree that supports the earth with a hand-saw and to slip into people's house through the chimney at night. More mischievous than actually evil, the "Killantzaroi" do things like extinguishing fires, ride astride people's backs, braid horses' tails, and sour the milk. Descriptions of them vary, and in one area they are believed to wear wooden or iron boots, the better to kick people, while other areas insist that they are hooved, not booted. In folktales, the twelve days of their power figure in a "wicked stepmother" story where a young girl is forced to walk alone to a mill through the twelve days, because her stepmother is hoping that the "Kallikantzaroi" will snatch her away.

Some households used to keep fires burning through the twelve days, to keep the spirits from entering by the chimney. A "yule log" in this case used to be a massive log set on end in the chimney, is burning or at least smouldering for the entire period. Protective herbs such as hyssop, thistle, and asparagus were suspended by the fireplace, to keep the "Kallicantzaroi" away. Other households, perhaps less devout, leave the kitchen strainer out so the Kallikantzari will spend the whole night trying to count its holes or trying to bribe them, would put meat out for the them . On Epiphany, the ceremonial blessing of the waters by the local priest was believed to settle the nasty creatures until the next year. Some local festivals still include representations of these entities, which may be a survival from Dionysian festivals.

Christmas is widely celebrated in Greece but Easter is still considered the main holiday.
Christmas officially begins on Christmas Eve when children walk the streets traveling from house to house singing a special Christmas carol called "kalanda" (announcing the birth of Christ and offering good wishes) accompanied by steel triangles and drums. Afterwards, the children are usually given sweets and money in appreciation.
In Greece, Christmas Day becomes the main attraction by both adults and children alike. Pork, roasted, in the oven used to be the traditional meal but in the last decades especially in the cities they have turkey stuffed with minced meat, chestnuts, rice and pine-cone seeds and on every table there are loaves of 'christopsomo' ('Christ bread'). This bread is usually made in large sweet loaves of various shapes and the crusts used to be engraved and decorated in some way that reflected the family's profession. Nowadays they are round loaves of bread decorated with the cross.
In Greek homes, Christmas trees were not commonly used in the past, but the last half of the century every house decorates a Christmas tree with a shining star on top in remembrance of the Bethlehem star and usually at the bottom there is a manger with Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. Decorations with missletoe and colourful lights adorn the balconies and gardens.

On this day every year all the Greeks but especially the students celebrate the students’ revolt against the colonels’ junta, having celebrations at schools, in remembrance of the 17^th November 1973.
Greece was under a military junta from 21^st April 1967 till July 1974.
The students started asking free elections for their councils in the universities and a friction with the colonels began.
Finally on 14^th November students from all the Athens area universities gathered in the Athens Technical University campus and using its electronic equipment they assembled a radio station, the only free media station of that time. They asked the colonels to resign so the country could have free elections and asked everybody to help them in their effort.

About 100000 people gathered outside the campus supporting the students when the colonels decided to send tanks to get into the Athens Technical University campus and disband the students by force.
This is a black page in the history of Greece. Greek soldiers were fighting against Greek students.

So every year on that day we mourn, we honour, we praise the dead students but also we celebrate the beginning of the fall of the military junta which finally surrendered on July 1974.

On the 28^th of October 1940 the Greeks said “NO’ (OXI in Greek) to the Italians, meaning they won’t give up their country to the Italians, thus getting involved in the 2^nd World War. For that reason we celebrate that day by doing a parade. All the buildings are decorated with flags.

TZATZIKI

½ kilo strained yogurt
1 cucumber very finely grated and dehydrated by putting in strainer and pressing with paper towel
2 garlic cloves very finely grated,
2 tbsp olive oil,
1 tbsp vinegar
Salt and peeper

Pound the garlic in a mortar and put salt and pepper on it. Mix the oil and the vinegar and pour it in the mortar.

Put the yogurt in a bowl and mix it with the oil and vinegar mixture. Add the the cucumber and stir well.

Serve it chilled

A little orange juice

Wash the chicken very well and rub it with the lemon, salt and pepper. Peel the potatoes, wash them and cut them in long pieces. Pour the orange juice over the potatoes. Put the chicken and the potatoes in a baking pan and cook it in the oven for one hour.

MOUSSAKA

½ kilo minced beef
225 gr onions, peeled and sliced
2 cloves garlic, chopped
3 medium aubergines, cut into rounds about 1cm) thick
2 tablespoons tomato puree
75ml) wine (red or white)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Oil
Salt and freshly-milled black pepper

For the topping

75 gr plain flour

75 gr butter1 pint milk
Parmesan cheese, grated
2 eggs
Salt, pepper and freshly-grated nutmeg

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C
First of all prepare the aubergines. They should be sliced and packed into a colander, then sprinkled with salt. Then place a plate on top of them and a heavy weight on top of that, and leave them for half an hour. This is to drain off some of their excess moisture. Meanwhile fry the onions and chopped garlic in some oil (preferably olive oil) for about 5 minutes, then add the minced meat to the pan to brown—stirring it to break up any lumps. In a basin mix together the tomato puree, wine, cinnamon and parsley, season it all with salt and pepper, then pour the mixture over the onions and meat when it has browned. Stir well, and leave on a gentle heat to simmer quietly.

Now back to the aubergines: heat some olive oil in another frying-pan, dry the aubergine slices in kitchen paper, then fry each one to a golden-brown on both sides. When they are browned leave them on kitchen paper to drain. When the aubergines are done, take a casserole and arrange some of them in it. Spread part of the meat mixture on top, followed by another layer of aubergines..

Next make up the topping for the moussaka. Melt the butter in a saucepan and stir in the flour until smooth, then add the milk gradually, stirring vigorously with each addition until you have a smooth white sauce. Next stir in the grated cheese, followed by a seasoning of salt, pepper and freshly-grated nutmeg. Allow the sauce to cool, then whisk up the 2 eggs, first on their own and then into the sauce. Pour the sauce over the meat and aubergines, then bake (uncovered) for an hour until the top is flufiy-golden.

Meatpie from Arlon

1 flaky pastry
For the dough:
250 g flour
1 egg
A pinch of salt
50 ml tepid water
75 ml oil
1 tea spoon of yeast
For the skipping:
800 g pork mincemeat
White wine(Elbling,a wine from luxembourg)
Onions
Garlic
Salt
Pepper
spices(parsley,or other spices according to your tastes)
1 egg to brush

Preparation

the day before:
Marinate the meat in the wine
For the dough:
In a large plate,pour the flour and the yeast.
As you are mixing,add the egg,the oil,the water and
the salt.
Mix everything to form a soft dough.
Prepare the meat by adding all the ingredients.
Put the meat on the centre of the dough.
Cover with the flaky pastry.
Stick the 2 pieces of dough using the white of the egg
Brush the top of the pie with a beaten egg.
Bake in the oven for 1 hour at 200°

Easter in Greece

On Holy Friday in the morning mass the priest takes the "body of the Christ" down from the cross and puts it in his tomb. Epitaphios is a wooden structure every church has and it is supposed to be the tomb of Christ. On Holy Friday morning girls decorate it with flowers, before the priest puts "Christ's body" in it.

During the evening mass boy scouts carry the Epitaphios around the city for a funeral procession.

Now it is Holy Week in Greece because most Greeks are Christian Orthodox and Orthodox Easter is usually one week later than Catholic Easter. The Greek word for Easter is Pascha, it has the same origin like the French word Pâques!
Schools are closed for two weeks for Easter vacations. Every day on Holy Week there is a mass at the church both in the morning and in the evening.
On Holy Thursday evening twelve gospels are read stating the Christ's Passion. During the Mass the priest carries the "body of Christ" and puts it on the cross.

Why chocolate eggs?

Easter is not only a feast during which we hide chocolate eggs. It's a very old religious feast. During the Lent, people couldn't eat eggs. So the peasants had too many eggs and they began to decorate them and to offer them to Easter.
In the 17th century a person had the idea to fill an egg with chocolate. At that time, people already liked chocolate.
Belgian chocolate is famous all over the world !

Rattles in Turpange

On Holy Thursday, Jesus was arrested. As a sign of mourning, the bells didn't ring anymore until Easter. The legend says that they left to Rome to be blessed by the Pope. To replace the bells, we go round the village with our rattles in the morning, at midday and in the evening.

Easter is a great family celebration. On that morning, when we get up , we look for the eggs that the bells, while returning from Rome, dropped in the gardens. Some children also receive gifts. At midday, the families meet around a good meal : lamb is often served.

Carnival in Belgium

The famous carnival in Belgium takes place in Binche.
Here are "Les gilles de Binche". On their hat, there are ostrich's feather. So their hats are very heavy.

Carnival at the village

Carnival in our village takes place during two days. On saturday evening, children and parents went dressed up. Children who are more ten years old may become the carnival prince of the year. This year, it's Alexis, a pupil of our school who was appointed as the prince. So he recieved "the village's keys".

On wednesday afternoon, all the pupils went to school dressed up. We had a party too. We presented sketches and dances that we had prepared. And then we ate waffles all together . In fact, actually, it should be doughnuts.

Paleo Faliro: Clean Monday (The First Day of Lent)

On Monday 6th March we didn't have school because it was Clean Monday. Clean Monday is the first day of Lent.
On this day we eat shrimps, mussels, oktapus, kalamari fruit and vegetables and a special kind of flat bread made out without yeast, called Lagana.
Tradition says that on this day the housewives started the spring cleaning of their houses in order to be clean for Easter so they didn't have time to make the regular bread they were doing the rest of the year.
We also fly kites on this day.

Paleo Faliro: Carnival

Last weekend we celebrated Carnival (Apokries in Greek).

On Friday 4 March we did not have classes.

We went to school dressed up and we had a party.

We had great fun.

Our school is one of the oldest public schools of Modern Greece, after the War of Revolution.

It was built in the beginning of the 20^th century at the centre of Paleo Faliro a suburb of Athens.

At that time Paleo Faliro was a seaside suburb where the rich Athenians had their summer houses. Now it is still considered a suburb of Athens but it is a high density populated residential area of the Athenians.

We have nine classrooms.

In our class, there are 10 pupils : 5 boys and 5 girls. We have two turtles.
Every Monday afternoon, we go to the swimming pool. On Tuesday morning, we have English classes during 2 hours and in the afternoon, we have catholic religion or ethics. On wednesday we have gym courses.

This year, we will take part to an art exhibition in a gallery in Arlon. The subject is a kind of proms in an imaginary garden to illustrate the five senses.

In May, the fifth and sixth grades will travel 3 days in the south of England.

In our school, there are 50 pupils and 3 teachers. There are one kindergarten class and two primary classes. The school is situated in the middle of the village. It was built in 1907, it will be centenarian next year!!

Turpange is located in south east of Belgium. There are 500 unhabitants. Meadows and forests surround the village.
The biggest nearest towns are Arlon in Belgium and Luxembourg City. Most of parents work in Luxembourg.
